I didn't plan on becoming addicted to sports and fitness. I was a hyperactive child and the only way my mum could get me to stop being such a little shit was through sports.
Namely swimming. 6-7 times a week if I remember. And three of those sessions were before school started. It sends a shiver down my spine thinking of the 5am alarm going off and my sister and I being dragged out of bed and driven to the freezing cold pool.
She still says it was worth it as I made a part-time and well paid career out of life-guarding during my spare time during school, college and then university.
I was never great, just consistently average. So when I grew old enough to defy her I quit.
But it wasn't long before I got itchy pants again and needed something to take the energy out of me. So I joined Havering Athletics club and picked the hardest event I could find, figuring they'd be less competition.
So my career as a 3000m steeple chaser began. I represented the team in the top division in the UK, competed all over the country and won quite a few races. Although, as most runners know, to maintain stamina and your level of performance you need to put the miles in and run. And run. And run. Which is fine if you live in sunny Australia and have a part-time job. I lived in Essex and began working as a creative at an advertising agency. The lack of time and winter months put an end to my promising career (although it was cold and deep down, I welcomed the extra hours at the office).
This brings us up to now. Well, nearly. For the past six years I discovered I could go to the gym and do a minimal amount of CV work and not put on any weight. Magic! No more cold nights. Just cosy, warm gyms and I never got out of breath (apart from a London Marathon appearance in 2005. 3 hrs 13 mins. Thank you.)
Until recently, I regularly played football with friends, which is so much fun it doesn't feel like exercise, I surfed whenever I was on holiday, I ran into work when the weather was nice, and attended the BBH bootcamp sessions which again, because of the amount of girls, never felt like a chore.
I also enjoyed pushing my body in the gym. I started lifting heavier and heavier weights and 'OT-ing', which means you lift heavy weights until a particular muscle can't take it any more.
It turns out my back couldn't take it and I slightly cracked a disc in my lower lumbar region. I'm now reduced to performing Pilates, cycling and you guessed it, my nemesis of the fitness world - swimming!
Oh well, only another four months of this to go.
Keep reading if you are. Promise they won't be as long next time. You just need to understand I'm not getting my fix of exercise at the moment and I'm like a bear with a tooth ache.
Grrrr...
I do the Gym (weights), football (soccer), running, swimming, cycling, boxing, pilates (reluctantly).
